Some of you may have seen that there is a new edition of Dark Heresy out. It's currently in Beta testing and I am thinking about running my own campaign on here using the new rules. I'll only have 6 spaces, MAX, if people are interested in it.
Brief overview:
Theocratic Heresy, Not uncommon in the 41st Millennium though there are those that wish it didn't exist... You have been contacted by one of those people, an Inquisitor of The Emperor of Mankind. Something that is uncommon in the in the Askellon Sector, your home.
The rules are available direct from Fantasy Flight Games,
http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_minisite_sec.asp?eidm=243&esem=2
Updates (Every Wednesday according to the website, update 2 is out now.)
http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_minisite_sec.asp?eidm=243&esem=4
EDIT: Something I forgot to mention, this will be a bit more investigative then combat focused. There will be some combat. Though I'm sure most of it will be the players fault. :P
Players (4/6)
Jayne (Psyker)
Mkoll
Mabbz
Rarity Declis
I'm limiting the group to only one Psyker for now. So fight amongst yourselves about who it might be. :P Let me know what kind of character you're thinking about playing and I'll help you create it if you like.
Updates will be on Sundays unless otherwise noted. I'll update this post with the latest update from FFG and I'll also post any house rules that might come up.
Im game for it. Always up for another RP. I will go over the rules once I have some spare time tonight. I assume character creation is in there as well?
It is. I'm still going over them too so it will be at least a week before I start, assuming there is enough people.
im also game for it ;D
I'm game. If I can find a way to get the rules and make sure my 'net is up and running when I move. :P
Character creation is a fantastic section to read. I've got lots of character ideas in my head from it. it's very different from first edition from what I've seen so far. Got a little bit left to read. .
So... should we roll up characters now?
I'm going to be away till monday, so if we can accept a small wait, I will do it when I get back. If not, go on without me and I will catch up.
I'm still reading through the rules so that's fine.
Edit: Ok, so this is now the sign up thread. I'm adding some extra stuff to the first post.
Ok then, lets see what I get...
Nefarian Serpine
Nefarian Serpine was probably chosen because of his technical know-how. Specifically, he is seen as something of a radical amongst his peers as he believes in using scientific experimentation to further his veneration of the Machine God. He has a worrying fascination for the Tau, and collects Tau technology in the hopes of 'purifying' it so that it glorifies the Omnissiah and can be used for the righteous cause of mankind.
All in all, his nature makes him good at figuring out the purpose of unknown technology and converting it to the cause of humanity. He once hijacked a Tetra in the heat of battle (his superiors had it destroyed afterward, sadly).

I rolled the 3d10 ones 10 time just so that I could work out where the relevant stats go in the list. Weird way of doing it perhaps, but it makes sense to me. :P I'll do over though if you'd prefer it though.
Starting Skills: Athletics, Command, Evade (rank 2), Intimidate, Medicae, Navigate, Pilot, Survival
Starting talents: Brace for Impact, Weapon Training (Las, Solid Projectile)
Starting equipment: Lasgun, combat vest, flak armour, grapnel and line, 12 lho sticks, magnoculars.
Background bonus: Imperial Guard characters count their Strength bonus as 2 higher for the purposes of determining how much they can carry.
Divination (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4169564/) = Reduce this character's Agility characteristic by 3. The first time this character suffers a critical wound each session, roll 1d10. On a result of 8 or higher, he does not suffer the critical wound and suffers a normal wound instead. not sure if we're using these but i rolled anyway. :P
I'll come up with some actual background for him tomorrow. :)
we are using everything. I've even got some extra stuff off the website that I'll roll for you guys. It includes some description stuff if you guys have trouble coming up with what your character looks like which I can roll.
My guy's going to basically be Mkoll in terms of description I think, but a bit bulkier, less wiry. Also a little bit younger.

Hmm... I'll take you up on that, since I can't think of anything :P. I'll pick my name when you give me an appearance.
There is a table in the book you can roll on for name.
Character height and weight is something you do need to know as part of the rules, I can roll for it or you can set it yourself.
Edit: Mabbz, You're Character is Wiry in build at about 1.75m tall and about 65kg, ruddy skin colouration, grey hair and green eyes, and a pierced eyebrow. A Belief/Superstition you picked up from home; Count the Blessings: Knowledge of power is power continued; maintaining a ledger of debts and favours helps ensure power is retained and strengthened. You carry a small skull charm from home and a bar magnet in a glass block from your time in the Mechanicus as mementoes.
Mkoll, Belief; Stone Abides: When entering a new building, press strongly against a wall to ensure it is as strong and eternal as faith. Mementoes: Bone Ring from Home and a shard of smoked glass from your time in the guard. I also rolled up a Quirk for Jaspar, well quirks. All the Dice were high for you, you ended up with two because of it, Bloodshot Eyes and Winestain Birthmark.
Note that Beliefs and Mementoes are just a RP thing and not important, you can discard them as you wish.
Also, Your D5 results for your fate threshold. Since you didn't roll for it.
Mabbz: 1 (I think my dice hate you... Your Fate threshold is 1.)
Mkoll: 4 (But they love you. Your threshold is 2.)
Cheers, I'll take everything you've given me except the pierced eyebrow. I'm not a fan of piercings :P
Also, my character's name is Nefarian Serpine, despite the fact that he's no more evil than average in the 41st millenium.
I'll work that stone thing into my character. Something like my dad being a stone mason who worked on the religious statues etc on my homeworld. :)
Also, thank you for the shiny Fate roll. I'd completely forgotten about Fate points. :P
Don't forget you have 500xp to spend during creation.
Ok then...
Increase Characteristic: Perception from 41 to 46: 200xp (noted on character sheet)

P58, in case you were wondering. That's where it give you the xp, and where it tells you how to use it.

WP 52 (+2 ranks +2 for Twist of Destiny)
Did you purchase to advances to WP with your xp? Because I'm afraid you can't do that. Also, upgrading WP just once would cost 200xp.
Quote from: P58, under the heading "Limit"For example, if a character starts with a value of 37 in a characteristic, at rank 1 he can purchase 1 advance for a characteristic of 42. Then at rank 2, as he has already purchased one advance in that characteristic, he can purchase one more for a characteristic of 47 and a total number of advances of 2
Quote from: P58, under the heading "Cost"Then, multiply the experience modifier by the characteristic's current bonus. The resulting value is the cost to advance that characteristic. For example, if the current value of the characteristic is 38, and the modifier was 50, then the total cost would be 150 (50 x 3).
The Mystic only pays 50 points to advance Willpower though. And 1 advance is +5 point in that skill. 100 points in that and 50 in the other 2. But I can make the adjustments if needs be. I think I would keep it in Agility though because that is the minimum to use Fire Shield. Will power of 42 isn't terrible I suppose.
Quote from: The Man They Call Jayne on August 11, 2013, 09:48:57 PM
The Mystic only pays 50 points to advance Willpower though.
That's not how it works. The total cost of an advance is determined by multiplying the base cost for your class (50) by the tens digit in your character's characteristic (I assume you had 42 when you started, so that would be 4). 4 x 50 = 200xp.
Similarly, advancing your agility from 40 to 45 would be 4 x 100 = 400xp.
Also, I think you need to know Manipulate Flame and Fiery Form before you can buy Fire Shield, but I could be wrong.
CONFUSING!!!
This is going to take a while it seems.
I'm having a spot of bother working out what multiple ranks in a skill, such as Observe, gives you. ???
Also, eww those characteristic upgrades are pricey. :P
Try Page 73. Basically, using a rank 1 skill gives you a -10 penalty, rank 2 is average, rank 3 gives a +10 bonus, rank 4 gives a +20 bonus and rank 5 gives a +30 bonus.
If I had a hard copy of the book, I would have read it cover to cover by now. I'm that kind of a person :P
If I had the real book I would be able to reference things far more easily. PDF format confuses me.
However. I have now settled on being a Lvl 2 Pyromancer and just gaining +2 points in Willpower because of my destiny trait thing (I already had cold hearted from my background traits).
Right. I need to print this out at some point. I hate reading anything that long on my screen. :P
By the math presented here it'd be free to get the first rank in every skill because anything x 0 = 0. I know it's the obvious exception to the rule, but still. :P
According to the skills sections all skills start at rank 1, while the skills you get as part of your role start at rank 2. Which they probably should have mentioned about 50 pages earlier. I really hate the layout of this book...

Yeah, it's not exactly clear on quite a bit. I guess they're more focused on mechanics right now.
Yeah... What Mabbz said...
They are listening to all complaints on their forums. There is a pretty major update already too. It does have some character creation stuff in it as changes.
Right, my xp is spent. I'll come up with my background on the fly. :P
Ok guys, I'd like to start this next Sunday so if everyone can have there character complete by then, that would be awesome. Also, come up with the reason the inquisitor choose you.
Nefarian Serpine was probably chosen because of his technical know-how. Specifically, he is seen as something of a radical amongst his peers as he believes in using scientific experimentation to further his veneration of the Machine God. Also, Rules update from FFG, these are your starting talents: Cold Hearted, Resistance (Psychic Powers),
Specialist (Adeptus Astra Telepathica), Weapon Training
(Las), Weapon Training (Low-Tech).
Why do you have [terrify] next to your malignancy?
I also have a Age Table I can roll on for peoples ages if they like but it's not really important in anyway. I have also updated the OP with when I plan to update and some other info. I'll probably update it regularly, so keep an eye on it. Though I'll probably tell you guys when I update it.
Ok, while I have written down everyone's character sheet, Could you guys also keep a copy somewhere for yourselves?
Age edited into profile.
Jaspar was chosen to join hte Inquisitor's retinue after an impressive career with the Imperial Guard, rising to the rank of Sergeant culminated inhim being one of just a handful of survivors from his regiment during a brutal siege on Boros. the regiment, previously oer 3000 strong was reduced to under 100 in the final battle, an battle which raged for 5 days. Jaspar and just one other member of his platoon survived, his friend, Marcus Nolan. Marcus died not long after as a reult of his wounds, leaving Jaspar as the sole survivor of 4th Platoon. The shard of smoked glass that Jaspar carries belonged to Marcus, Jaspar swore it would be returned to their homeworld if he ever got the chance.
That superstition is going to cause real trouble in a firefight isn't it.
My malignancy is witches mark. Witches mark requires me to pick a power and if I use it, I suffer 5 points of corruption. Terrify is a power that I could reasonably use in an interrogation situation, so im not copping out by picking a power I will never use.
My replies may be slow for a while, but I'll hopefully get that sorted soon. If nothing else I'll reply while at work, where I am most days anyway. :P
I GIVE YOU... THE RP THREAD... LET THE GAMES BEGIN...
Also, there is a new rules update available with big changes to Mechanicus Character creation.

I'll update my character sheet shortly, but are we going to follow every rules update throughout this campaign? I just lost a skill and piece of starting equipment, and having that happen mid game is probably going to cause problems.
Only worry about the background update as that actually helps you. Since the characters are already made, the creation stuff isn't important unless you need to roll a new one. If we are in structured time when an update comes out then we'll ignore it till afterwards. Otherwise we will be following them unless it's something we've housed ruled. Which I'm thinking about doing with weapon mods. Don't like the rulebook rule or the updated
I don't know why but I expected more banter. I'll have the next part up tomorrow..
Big changes to the way armour in the new update as well as big changes to finding Fate for new characters. Another big one is that Jayne can basically roll no higher then a ten on the Perils table.
I'll also do another small update tomorrow sometime to answer the questions and update with the extra gear you're being given. I'm not sure if any of you notice but during creation you could of rolled for extra equipment. I'll be giving you guys a chance to requisition extra gear from the Orbital you'll be docking at before descending to the planet.
Hey, is there still room? I feel like being a Priest of the Emperor, if one is needed.
There is. Not sure where to slot you in though. Probably won't be till everyone is planet side. Which won't be long. Have you got a copy of the rules?
I be getting them today. Basically, I'm thinking just a good old fashioned, full of faith and fire, "The God-Emperor'll sort'em out" Imperial Priest, not very high-ranking, but certainly very certain of the God-Emperor.
I'll get stuff rolled up later and shoved onto here for you, and then you let me know when I'm needed, no need to force me in. i'll just follow until then.
TD, you expected banter with a guardsman, a psyker and a tech adept? Psykers are seen as freaks at the best of times, ad mech struggle getting on with people and guardsmen don't tend to know people long enough to make jokes before they get shot. :P
Have an update.
This is true. But no single one of you is exactly normal, hence why you have all caught an inquisitors eye. Oh, should probably mention that none of you are actually supposed to know that you are in an inquisitors service yet...
You are should also know that you are on a Navy Destroyer, so you know someone with some pull is working in the background. Next update will be Sunday as normal.
Rarity, it's all good mate. I'll probably slip you in in a couple weeks time. If you have any trouble with creation then PM me. Also keep in mind that there has been a couple changes to creation rules in the updates so get the latest one when you get the rules.

Background:
Orson was the middle child of a rich, upper Hive Family, and like all middle children, was extremely restless and never quite fitted in. His Brothers took after Father. Older Brother would spend his time learning the books, and how to run the Family Business, and Little Brother would spend his time learning the Lasgun, the Tactica Imperialis and His Bolt Pistol to continue the family heritage in the Planetary Defence Force.
Orson, being the small one out of the three, was somewhat ignored by Father, the big bluff man he was, with little black eyes peering out from over a gigantic mustache. But Mother instead spent her time imparting Orson with the love of the God-Emperor; as he grew older, he grew more and more invested into the literature of the God-Emperor; ignoring both schooling and friends, he spent his time debating theology with the local Priests, and handling Missionary work in the Lower Hive.
During a particularly rough night, when the Priests were attacked by local gangers, Orson was shot by a bolter round in the chest; however, as blessed as Orson was, it failed to explode and the surgeons removed it successfully. When he returned, Father declared him pathetic for getting shot without a fight, and Little Brother and his teacher, a man with too much nose hair and little elsewhere, began to teach him the sword so he may learn to defend himself.
However, to the amusement of that old teacher, he found himself much more gifted with the axe. Later that night, Mother laughed and said that Orson was descended from a great warrior, who was the God-Emperor's Executioner and would remove the head of the heretic with an axe. The next morning, Orson found a large Chainaxe in a case at the foot of his bed; it was dark green marble cased, and the teeth of the blade shone with a bloodthirsty malice, and when Orson picked it up, it felt both curiously light and worryingly deadly.
He continued his lessons, eventually learning how to duel with the axe, raising both sneers and eyebrows at the young noble with his unwieldy, ugly and inelegant axe, compared to the more graceful swords of the other nobles. That was, until Orson took the foot off one of the other nobles during a drunken duel. Orson became ostracised, and Older Brother told Orson that the family had lost a lot of respect from his actions, and would he kindly leave before he embarrasses them further?
By his 25th, the Ceremony of Adulthood took place; his Older Brother was already heir to the family legacy, and Little Brother had already served as a Sergeant in the local forces, and seemed quite set to have a life of command in His Glorious Army. So it was with great shock to Father and a sad, but knowing smile from Mother that he announced during his ceremony that he would travel the local sector to spread the word of the God-Emperor, and upon his return, would be accepted into the Priesthood.
That night, he got exceedingly drunk with a stranger, who took his details and promised him a life of adventure and a chance to face the enemies of Mankind, which Orson drunkenly accepted, claiming that he would be the next Sebastian Thor, making the stranger laugh. "I'll just let a friend know you're interested."
With a kiss from Mother, a hug from Little Brother, cold stares from Father and Older Brother, and glares from all else, Orson left on the first shuttle outbound to spread the God-Emperor's word.
That's cool, I trust you. The only thing I would ask of asked would be for you to burn a fate point or skip checking if you got extra but I'll ignore that for some excellent background, I would of given you one for it.
Some additional stuff;
Fit 1.75m/70kg, Ruddy Skin, Black hair, Green Eyes (change or use these as you will)
Physical Quirk, Normally I'd roll for this but you have a prefect one in you're background: Scarred Chest/torso (Bolt Rounds hurt.)
Highborn custom, Count the Blessings: Knowledge of power is power continued; maintaining a ledger of debts and favours helps ensure power is retained and strengthened.
Home world memento, Pilgrimage Token
Background memento, Ball of Feathers (Dice really wanted you to have this.)
Just some extra RP stuff.
I'll possibly throw you in in the next update but we'll see how we go.

Height: 160cm; he's not a tall fellow, pale skin, black hair, green eyes.
Scarred Chest (Bolt Round)- I like it.
Pilgrimage Token; a small bracelet around his left hand of the Imperial Eagle clutching a broken tooth in it's talons- his Mother's Family Crest.
Ball of Feather- Cloak of Eagle Feathers, gathered from the top of the Hive; a final gift from Little Brother
:D Let me know when I'm needed?
Those changes are fine. I'll pm you when I introduce you.
Sorry I can't do a full update today, I can't get to a computer to access my notes and such. So a minor one, which having thought about it, is where I should of left off in the last update. In the mean time, you have a chance to get extra gear. Weapons wise, you can get anything that you currently have the skill for, (assume you have proof of your aptitude) though you won't be given heavy weapons at all. Mister guardsman can try and get grenades but they won't give you more then two total (assuming you pass the test) and they won't give anyone demo supplies. Also keep in mind you are supposed to be investigating, so at least try and be subtle? I know I'm asking a lot there. :P
So can I have a Grav Pistol then? :P Will be handy if we run into any heavily armoured foes.
You don't have the skill for that. (Is it even in the book?)
It's a pistol. I can fire a pistol. I was mostly kidding anyway.
I really don't know what I might need. I have a Laspistol which is pretty reliable, easy to maintain and the packs can be recharged by putting them in a fire.
Will I have the ability to use out of battle Pyromancy? Like lighting a fire or a candle? Nothing that has a major impact on the environment or situation.
I don't see why not. If you were trying to be showy or doing something that takes a lot of control then I'd say a test but lighting a fire with dry wood or lighting a lho-stick wouldn't need one. And a gravity pistol would be an exotic weapon and you'd need weapon pro (gravity pistol). :P
Sorry I haven't updated today, couldn't get on the computer long enough. I'll do it in the next couple days and get it up.
Have an update boys and crazy pyro who'll find a way to die in the first fight. Or come damn close anyway. :P
So Fantasy Flight is extending the Beta and doing a massive overhaul of the rules. Since it's going to be such a massive change, we'll stick with the rules we have and house rule anything we find that works poorly or is just stupid.
More info here; http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=4361
Argh. So I'm changing the day I do updates. It will either be on Wednesdays or Fridays in the future. In the mean time, you guys can chat a bit more and decide what you are going to do next. You can check out the addresses (Tell me which one), chat with the Adminastratum contact, try and find equipment for those that failed on the station (Military grade stuff is heavily restricted so an extra -20 to get it AFTER you find someone who can supply it) or something you can come up with. Let me know, either here or in character and I'll do the update. Also, a fate point each if you don't split the group up.
Have an update.
So, I am the first to suggest turning down the fate point and splitting the party. I do think it's a good idea though, and I'd rather act like my character than do something for an out-of-character bonus.
You are indeed it seems. Though you could always just be the drunkard in the corner, watching and listening, while the more social members of the group drink and mingle.
IT'S AN UPDATE!!!! I could of split the group up but didn't, plus you guys would of come up with this solution anyway. I'm gonna give everyone a temporary fate point cause I gave you that solution. It'll only last 24 hours or the end of your first combat encounter, which ever comes first. (Yes a bar brawl would count as a combat encounter.)
24 RL hours or In Game?
Such things are always in game.
New Update. More options and not much more info. Still, you have made a friend and have intro to someone with more info.
Also, if anyone, either in the game or not, wishes to make suggestions and such about my writing, it will be appreciated.
Sorry it's not much of an update. Having a bit of a mental block and I don't like just throwing you into the next section unless everyone more or less agrees. If everything is starting to lag then I'll do it though.
Not actually expecting a fight but I figure I haven't laid out a plan for it and thought I better explain how I plan to run them. I'll be stealing Rav's three rounds rapid idea, as well as get people to give me board guides to how their character will act in combat. I'll also post Combat updates as quickly as I can giving everyone 48 hours to send me PMs with actions. Final point, if you guys want Nefarian to check out the possible security feeds around the warehouse, then I'll edit it into today's update post.
Each feed has a -30 to my Tech Use skill check. I imagine I would use my Intelligence stat, which means I'd need an 8 or less on a d100 to access each feed. I think I'd also need a 38 or less to hide my access from whoever we're up against. Normally I don't care about that kind of thing and would go for it anyway, but those are quite steep odds :P.
I'll go with the group consensus here. Should I go for it?
Don't forget that at this point you have access to more powerful equipment that may or may not give bonuses.
is it too late to still join?
Not at all. You got the rule book?
yes
Excellent. I'm not sure when the next update will be. Should be at the end of the week though. (I got my shiny, shiny copy of Assassin's Creed 4 today and shall be playing it all night. And tomorrow Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D will be on.)
Also, do you guys want to meet the Adminstratum contact before going to the club?
The club isn't until the evening, so lets go see the contact first thing in the morning.
I haven't forgotten you guys. Just haven't been on a computer. I'll do an update as soon as I can.
So that took longer then expected... Still UPDATES YAY!!!!!
I know it's only small, I'm trying to get you lot to interact and choose what to do. TELL ME DAMN YOU!!!!
Well, I already did tell you, I'm just waiting for someone else to agree or argue.
Quote"Find anything interesting in the unit."
" No, it is very heavily encrypted and there are lots of security measures in place. Whoever owns this place is very well connected. I haven't seen security measures like this since...."
"Since...?"
Looking embarassed Nefarian continued, "I am not allowed to tell you. I've already said too much."
Can Nefarian tell me? Maybe via PM? You've got me interested now.
Your background. He has been sworn to secrecy by order of the Ordos Xenos. Or his Mago. Or I assume he would be.
Ah, gotcha. I forgot my own background
You guys still interested in continuing this?
I am, but I don't have anything to add at this point. Mkoll has agreed with me, so I don't really have a response. Maybe make it a rule that even if you don't want to make an in-character post you still have to say here if you agree to a course of action?
I am currently laptop less. Assume that I will agree with your course of action and try to find a way to include burning stuff.
Perhaps a short hiatus until everyone has regular access to a computer of some kind? I'd say that's what happened to declis as well.

I could keep you updated by text? We're on the same network so texts are free, and you did me that favour a while back.
