Title: Tempest's Blood Angels- 17 Jan- Modular Urban Boards!!
Post by: Tempest Six Two on August 09, 2012, 04:21:02 AM
Hey Guys, here's the 'test' marine i've done up for my Blood Angels who are currently in the build. Wanted to know people's feedback and opinions on it. Please be aware that he's a rush job, the new minis im building will have a bit more attention paid to blacklining, getting decent coverage etc... btw, he's not shiny, thats just my bright light I used to (hastily) illuminate him...

Also worth mentioning that a full step-by-step of the process, with pics, can be found on my blog at the following:
http://tempests40kbunker.blogspot.com.au/2012/08/blood-angels-paint-scheme-sorted-out.html (http://tempests40kbunker.blogspot.com.au/2012/08/blood-angels-paint-scheme-sorted-out.html)

Looking for a happy medium between GW's current BA colour and the orange-red of 2nd Edition *thinks fondly of 'back in the day'*, and i think this works, all with unmixed new-range GW paints, washes and glazes. Im especially happy with Dragon's Bright Orange, which is a great peach orange, perfect for highlighting BA :)

Feedback and comments appreciated!

Looks good!

The colour, to me at least looks a bit pink? Although that might just be the lighting, the one before last on your blog seems to show a nicer colour in my opinion, and I don't think a final stage highlight could effect the colour that much! :P

Very nice start to an army, I'm sure once you get going they'll be on par with the other things you've painted!

Yeah cheers Will, I'm hoping to have a bunch of assault marines done soon, they've just arrived actually...

The colour is skewed in the last picture, you are correct it's not as pink as the pic makes out, a much more traditional reddy-orange but my white light tends to do funny things to the tone.

Loving the new paint range, it's making it so easy to get good results with minimal effort (well, maybe a little bit).

Currently laying down some coats on a Furioso, should have pics soon.

I really like the color! Bright enough to pop but not too bright. I cant wait to see that Furioso!

Looking good! :D solid scheme and no pink or orange highlights which BA's sometimes suffer from :P
Good luck with the army painting!

Furioso got some more coats of red last night, loving how the new colours work on large surfaces as well. I also assembled 10 jump pack marines and  all my resin bases and forgeworld stuff cleaned and ready to paint. I've ditched the desert bases I originally bought for some awesome ruin/rubble bases.

OMG I need to stop spending money on this army... but I cant!! I just bought another Furioso and two Drop pods... cos, you know, if its in a Drop pod (and therefore must be reserved) it doesnt count towards the number of units that can be voluntarily reserved :) :) :)

^^^ Exactly! While i've got a warm orange tone in the red as my base, there will be no glowing orange edge highlights at all!! Dragon's Bright Orange (aka Peach) FTW!

Wish I could rush my models and they end up like that...  ::)

Still, very good :) A whole army of those would be very striking. I never saw the old 2ed BA, so I can't comment on that, but they certainly do stand out as blood angels to me.

Bit of an update- Terminators are on the go. Got the pins inserted into the bases and holes in the feet as well, but not attached until the bases are all completely painted. In the second pic all the bases are base coated Mechanicus Standard Grey.

I've also finished mounting the FW BA shoulderpads as well (not pictured), they are very hard to use on assault arms as they are larger than the standard ones and have a lot of detail that hangs down from them. Had to use greenstuff under the pads to get them to attach to the arms in the end, but you cant see anything :)

(Apologies for the lighting...)

Here's one of them and the Termy Librarian, showing their painted and mildly drybrushed bases. I (partially) painted the black edging onto the bottom of Librarian's base to compare it to the grey on the rest of them, not sure which way i'll go yet. Will be adding some green foliage tufts though as weeds growing through the cracks and rubble of the ruins.

Cheers Will, yeah I reckon they're a good choice, should contrast well with some greenery on there.

Little bit of progress... I need a new medium brush though, the one I'm using now is all ragged.

Edit: Behold! Links that Work!! (updating on an iPhone- never a sure fire way to do things...)

Librarian- blue armour partially done... It's coming up okay, I'm starting to enjoy painting him more and more as I keep going.

I've also realized that I have an innate fear of running dry on the old paintrange halfway through a brand new army- behold the 26 'new' paints I've amassed just for the Blood Angels.

I'm still using old stuff that's a perfect match or near enough, but the main armour colours and newer washes and glazes were crucial. Still, there's AU$132 here alone, and I'm going back for more when I get paid tomorrow. Do I have a problem? Lol.

Yeah you have a problem, your image tags! :P

That's a pretty crazy buy, it's a bit like starting out all over again with your paint collection. I don't even have that many paints for my three armies. Might need to start picking up some more though, blending is so much easier when you have the mid-tone colour as well as the two extremes.

Looking forward to seeing the pics, :D

Title: Re: Got my new Blood Angel paintscheme sorted out
Post by: Tempest Six Two on September 12, 2012, 02:14:25 PM
I'll agree with you regarding mid-tones- I now have all the required reds, blues and yellows, as well as the bone colours for tabards, cloth, parchment, books etc... To be honest I think that all I need now is a darker Green (Caliban?), and I'm going to continue using the old washes where applicable- Badab, Devlan, Thraka etc, as their minimal applications will never be noticeable if I ever replace them with new product.

I did look today at some Vallejo paints, but felt dirty afterwards and quickly returned to the GW rack.. hahaha

All I have to do now is convince my 4 month old Daughter to sleep more often and my army will come along a lot quicker... hard to paint when I'm spending most of my time walking her around the house trying to get her to settle! Its all worthwhile though :)

Edit: Yes, its a crazy buy. Especially when my 'old' paints (still useable in some way or another) numbers 82 pots.  :facepalm001: :facepalm001: :facepalm001: :facepalm001: :facepalm001:

Ha! So how many paints do you have now? :P ... i feel a thread coming on xD

Great looking marines so far, red is nice and rich. Where are the bases from? Quite cool but not detracting from the minis!
Title: Re: Got my new Blood Angel paintscheme sorted out
Post by: Tempest Six Two on September 17, 2012, 01:40:54 AM
Hmm, yeah... like well over 110 paint pots now. Sad

Bases are "ruins" from back to base IX here in Australia. Roughly AU$60 got me 10 Termie bases, 3 Dread bases and 40 Regular infantry bases. Only thing that remains will be to construct a matching base for the Stormraven to tie in with.

Have been painting Assault Marines like there's no tomorrow, will have something up relatively soon.

I like the red quite a bit. Red is always a pain for me, thankfully I saw this Irn Brue tutorial once that turns reds amazing... ;)

Yeah, in reality my reds suck. I might try Khador eventually though, so I will probably bookmark this.

Base colours sorted, still needs a glaze and some more blacklining.... looks okay though!

Got 6 basecoloured and washed, just gotta reapply the Meph red, highlights and finish the helmets.

There's close to 20 assembled though, plowing through them!! My daughter makes it hard to find time though- So im sneaking 30 minutes paint time in here and there...

^^^ speaking of, she's sitting on my lap at current mashing the keyboard, so i've retyped this about 3 times hahaha!  ::)

Oh look, another Librarian! He came out of the letterbox, got unpackaged and I had his front carved down and DA sword on the shoulder cut down within a few minutes. A hit of greenstuff, and voila. BA Librarian. Im toying with installing a magnet in his back so i can swap from foot to jump pack depending on the list im building. Got a bunch of FW Crusade packs lying around... or maybe a San Guard pack minus wings. Not sure yet.

And the Sraven, awaiting my attentions. Meph red basecoat only at this point, im trying to work out what I want to do with shading and highlights.

So many individual units on the go, but i'm getting progress on almost everything each week. Very happy with how its going.

EDIT: Mods, do you want to maybe move this across to the Project Logs section?? I'd prefer not to create a new thread...

Done.

Sraven is looking good so far. Can't wait to see more progress!

Your plog makes me wish I had more time to spend painting...

And some shiny mettalic Sang Guard. Lots of Sepia washes on these guys, over a Yellow foundation and gold on top of that. Just have to put down some black wash in the deepest crevasses and maybe some thinned out silver for the extreme edges then i can move on to the weapons and details.

Awesome job tempest, really nicely done. The dreadnought was also really nicely done, a really clean paint job.

Dude, your Sang Guard look plenty good already, stick with the NMM you've done it really done look great!! Two of my SG above are painted up NMM under those recent metallic paintjobs, I just changed them because I wanted all my other BA lads to be 'real' metal and they wouldn't have tied in at all.

Im sure a lot of other people will agree with me that keeping up momentum is the hardest part of painting an army to a schedule or deadline... That and real life throwing loads of obstacles in front of you.

Anyhow, I should stop typing and keep painting!

Whats with all the sang guard lately? :P Some sort of SG gang?  I need to buy a boxed set so i dont feel left out now. Then we can roll deep in our blingin' gold armour and pimp underlighting on our rhino!

Love the dread, the muted gold around the sarcophagus is very nice. Its gold, but its not overpowering to draw the eye. Good luck with the rest of the sang guard!
Title: Re: Tempest's Blood Angel project- updated 10 October
Post by: Tempest Six Two on October 21, 2012, 10:26:32 AM
Glad you like the Dread Thantos, his gold is actually just boltgun metal/ lead belcher with two washes of Seraphim Sepia. I then blotted on a hit of Devlan/Agrax around the rivets, it's a nice muted look. Never been a huge fan of mega shiny gold, it doesn't sit well with me, at least on vehicles.

Although my Sang Guard are looking relatively bright. Just need to counter this with a lot of bright/shiny red details and blood drops.

Last night whilst re-arranging my Dark Angels in their magnificent glass display case, I came to the realisation that my 'chaos black spray undercoat + crappy grey highlights' Ravenwing bikes looks shocking- all 6 bikes and an attack bike, I think i originally did them up in a night in order to make it to a tournament, they are all really poor....

30 minutes later,  they're ALL stripped back to basic bike chassis (legs still attached), ravenwing front fairing removed, boltguns all recovered, and most of the the arms and torsos useable again as well. Even filed down some of the biker helmets to remove the ravenwing emblem as well.

Just have to file and smooth them back a bit where the bits were glued on, give them another quick hit of black spray and start laying down some red :) Im going to run 6 bikes (2guys with melta, sgt with power... sword?) and three attack bikes. eBay looks like it can provide the replacement handlebars i need (two snapped coming apart, not recoverable) and some more biker arms. Gotta buy another two attack bikes soon as well.

Question for you all- heavy bolters on the attack bikes, or multi meltas? MM's are 10pts more, which i can squeeze into the list, but i'm thinking i need some actual long range support, but is that kind of wasting the high toughness and speed of the bike?

Small update: 14 Marines now in basic Meph Red with washed recesses... with base coloured heads glued in place. Useable for games at this point, only another 16 to assemble, undercoat and paint... *sigh*. Takes 40 minutes to just apply the red, whilst leaving the legs/chest/ armour joints unpainted, then a 5 minute heavy wash, but only in the recessed/joint/edge areas (Carroburg stains a lot, so an all over wash makes for lots more time re-covering with the base colour). Having a baby gives me only an hour tops every night to get some hobby time in, and I have to make the rest of the time up over the weekend...

We've now got an Apocalypse scheduled for 24th of this month, will either be two or three a side, 2K per player and mainly just general 40K units with no superheavies. Should be a very brutal affair- so far the lineup will be me with my Blood Angels, Alan's Space Wolves, Ash with either his Salamanders (or Black Legion?), Colin with his Deathskulls (my old army), Adam's Imperial Guard and possibly Brendan with Dark Angels. The majority of armies coming to the table are assault oriented, and the only thing I think that'll be warranted is to get the Orks and IG on opposing table sides, the rest should balance out! We're working on a table layout and theme at the moment, im sure it'll be crazy like always :)

When these things are scheduled I always find time to fit in some extra painting, so should get a lot more done in the next 3 weeks :)

As a taster, here's a couple of shots from our last couple of Apoc games...

40,000pts- 17ft long table...

IIRC... 24,000pts? U-shaped table, with twin bridges in the middle!!

'Mild' Apoc- 8,000pts- relaxed arvo game :)

I can't wait to see more!

Cheers mate, although I'd really only call it a 'partialy painted collection of small plastic men' at this point :)

Got the remaining jump marines assembled over the weekend. Something i've really noticed is the disparity between the old assault marine box set jump packs and the ones in the Death Company box- the ASM ones have so much more core shift, mold lines aplenty and a lot of annoying flash around the exhausts. The DC ones, being from relatively new molds are all super crisp and clean, much nice to deal with concerning cleanup and painting.

I'm also assembling a couple of Tactical Squads from the remaining 'foot troop' contents of the DC box- just a generic Missile Launcher + Flamer loadout, these guys will be used to hold backline objectives, although I might DP them in if the points are there.

All 16 remaining assault marines are now assembled and attached to their bases, this is how it stands right now...... I'm gearing up for a 2000 each x 6 players Apocalypse on the 24th, and progress has never been better. And sleep, I barely remember what that is... hahaha.

The lords of the army- the Dark Vengeance libby has now been given some basic blue and red. He's getting a Sanguinary Guard single thruster jump pack, as the twin intakes of the normal ones just don't work with his psychic hood.

Just the other night I sat down at 8:30 with a pile of sprues, and got to bed at 1am with a completed Stormraven... which I then got up early the next day to give a quick hit of red... this one sports the assault cannon turrets, but I've got the nose MM as well. Was thinking about the cyclone ML but I prefer the SR at its base points cost TBH.

Here's my three attack bikes, assembled except for rider/gunner and multimeltas. Sourcing a single MM is hard, even on eBay. Everything from this list either falls from the sky, or is super fast so I had to take these.

Sang Priest #1 WIP- I cut the hand out of the narthecium/reductor arm and installed a hand with chainsword. His grail is GS around a 1mm piece of metal rod that's been run all the way through the middle of his hand and the top half is built around a cut in half meltabomb.. When it was dry I cut off four tiny blood drops from the side of a Death Company chainsword and (with great difficulty) superglued them around the edge of the grail. Just waiting on DC legs and jump packs to arrive in the mail, I'm building a second SP as well.

Meltaguns and their corresponding arm sets are all assembled, and slide perfectly into place once the marines are done. Army- wide I've got two twinlinked MMs on the Sravens, meltagun on the Furioso, six in the assault squads and three multimeltas on the bikes... cos, you never know when you're gonna be up against armour...

Some progress this arvo on the Librarian....

He's a fairly stern looking dude.

Sang Priests... going to run with bare heads I've decided. Still loads to do.

All 30 ASMs are now basecoated red, with yellow helmets.

Some simple striping on the meltaguns makes them stand out- 2nd ed nostalgia FTW. There's now six melta marines in total.

Really nice work Tempest, looking good.

That librarian will be great when it's finished, and the priests are coming along really nicely. Those chalices are really nicely sculpted, and the painting is solid so far.

Nice to see some progress in the hobby section, hopefully I'll be able to throw some stuff in soon, when I get back home and have a camera. :P

Yeah cheers Will, im happy with how they're progressing. Im trying to strike a balance between smashing them out super fast and still getting lots of details done/ keep the painting quality high.

Deadline for Cancon is 26 January, which is closer than it seems. Going to be a lot of late nights for me to get them completed before then. At this rate I think I can have them all in base colours, perhaps minus a few of the really fine stuff (scrollwork, etc?). Its no huge deal, as there's another 'con on in June that I'll be attending, which will be after my 16 weeks off work on full pay.... taking all my Annual Leave and Long Service Leave in one giant 4-month block.

To be honest, i'll most likely have time to paint up that Necron force i've been thinking about.... especially seeing how those guys just need metal paint, wash and some highlights and they're done!! Hmmmm. But for now, gotta keep on track and hammer out the boys from Baal.

Custom jump pack- take a CSM packpack, two tubes from a ball-point pen, two small turbines from a drop pod, some 0.25mm plasticard and Voila!! Heresy-esque jump pack for my Librarian. Might add a bit more detail in plasticard- thinking some nozzle vanes for the exhausts, then hit it with some colour.

The turbines are pinned to the backpack, its very strong and should never ever break.

My Raven needed a base to match the resin ones the rest of the army has, so I did up a section of 4mm MDF and used a dremel and cutting wheel (and metal ruler guide) to carve in some 13mm slabs, then cut it to fit the base. Added some cut-out broken  sections and a cut out in the middle for the flight stand to sit inside. Added some really fine sand and some slab/tiles sitting on top and then painted it up the same as the resin bases. Too easy :)

Gotta repaint the sides of the base and add some further drybrush highlights. Fairly pleased with it :)

Here's some pics of the assault sgts- did up a stylised reflecty powersword scheme for them, seems to look okay?? Got all three blades done now, just gotta do the hilts and details.

And the whole 3 squads... got base colours on all the cloth/tabards, all the eyes are painted in and the helmets are finished. Still heaps more to do- the basic red armour still needs doing, plus basic highlights- this is where the bulk of the remaining work is.

Oh, and I've been bad... I should have been painting but my parents said we *had* to take the boat out, so I spent a few days wakeboarding and waterskiing... I spose I need some downtime?? Its been about two years since I last went out. Very good times :)

I think you did an excellent job on the storm raven's base. It matches the others very well.

I also like the stylised powerswords. I'm sure you could improve them by spending more time on the transitions but as this army project seems to be about speed and good quality - sort of value for time - I think they're a nice touch as they are.

I'm very much looking forward to seeing massed ranks of completed assault marines.

Whoops, forgot to put up this little item... Drop Pod, customised to transport a Dreadnought with magnetised removable fin- lands, explosive bolts blow one of the fins out and the doors drop. If one considers that the stormbolters or missile pod drops down from a recess in the roof, then the Dready fits in there no worries!! Im going to paint some hazard stripes around where the bolts would blow, make it look all legit :) The mount in the roof for the gun is magnetised too, so i can swap from the stormbolter to the missile pod, and they still swivel like normal.

Update. In between slathering red on everything in sight, i've been trying to get my urban modular boards ready for the tourney as well. Been putting down the road lines, some gutter edging and some drawn on drains. The drains will all eventually have silver/orangey paint on them for a slightly rusted look, but they work okay for now. Not bad for something done with a permanent marker :)

I've also started building a whole heap of street lights, using the outside edges of sprues, a cut down Tau Drone, some surplus large dice and a round 40K base. Underneath is a thin metal square, and the boards all have magnets sunk into them at various intervals. The lights are solidly stuck to the board, but easily moved and are very sturdy. I've also started making some road signs as well- will have a few wrecked streetlights and signs to add variety.

Intersection looks so cool. Got two X intersections, two T intersections and two straights built so far.

Here's two of the boards so far, got another 4 to finish the details on.

Street lights and signs WIP.

Not trying to be a necromancer or anything, but I am really enjoying your project log Tempest! Great colour schemes, models, and conversions! Keep up the awesome work.

Ah, thanks Osiris, glad you like it, there's plenty more to come!

Here's some photos before Cancon last month...

Got a bit more done on these guys, including a change to the Termy Librarian's axe head. 800-grit sandpaper allows for smooth removal of old paint for repainting :) And the jump libby has had his backpack basecoloured and stuck on.

Sang Priests. Decided against bare heads as I wanted to maximise the amount of white on these guys without going overboard. I need to build another one I reckon, they are so useful- furious charge against vehicles means my assualt marines wrecked rear AV 10/11 with fists and blades only in most cases!

Looking good tempest, those Sanguinary Priests are ace!

I like what you did with the jump pack libby, looks good. And the terminator ones axe is really nice now.

Keep it up! Awesome army.
