1850 Codex Marines - Salamanders

HQ

Vulkan He'stan - 190

Librarian - 140
+ Plasma Pistol
+ Jump Pack
+ Null Zone
+ Smite

Troops

Tactical Squad (10) - 250
+ Multi-melta
+ Melta
+ Power Fist
+ Melta Bombs
+ Rhino
+ Stormbolter

Tactical Squad (10) - 240
+ Multi-melta
+ Flamer
+ Power Fist
+ Rhino
+ Stormbolter

Tactical Squad (10) - 215
+ Heavy Bolter
+ Flamer
+ Rhino
+ Stormbolter

Elite

Terminator Assault Squad - 455
+ 2 TH/SS
+ Land Raider Redeemer
+ Extra Armor

Fast Attack

Assault Squad (10) - 235
+ 2 Flamers
+ Power Fist

Vindicator - 125
+ Stormbolter

Total: 1850

Vulkan runs with the termies and the Librarian was rolling with the assault squad.

I played this list last night against 3+ armor save wraith heavy Eldar and eked out a turn 5 win with 1 tactical sergeant holding an objective to 0 for my opponent. Seize ground with 3 objectives, DoW deployment. Some highlights:

- Librarian got insta-gibbed by Eldrad Mind War. Failed to cancel and failed to defeat it. Max fail.
- Assault squad got shot up and raped by a shining spear charge. I had never played against them before, and they are ridiculous.
- Vindicator did absolutely nothing. Spent 2 turns shooting an Av14 building with Dark Reapers inside. Miss, shaken. Then shot at a Wave Serpent and hit and whiffed to damage (y'xa'uk strength reduced to 8!!). Why do my marine tanks always do nothing!!
- Assault termies and Vulkan raped his 10 man Wraithguard squad to keep him from scoring. Only Vulkan was left end of game after a couple Wraithlords joined the scrum.
- Eldrad got his head exploded by a thunderhammer - glorious ;D

I would have definitely lost if it went past turn 5, but hey, you take what you can get.

From looking over the list it seems pretty solid and what I do like is that fact that your have written it because you want the list to be fluffy and Salamander-like rather than simply trying to get the most out of Vulkan's ability as possible. The list itself is pretty solid so this isn't going to be a: "Change this, change that!" response but merely giving you some food for thought in case you want to change the list at a later date.

Anyway, Vulkan is a pretty damn powerful character (same as all the special characters) and I would always advise you to take a special character over a standard captain because they fill their roles much cheaper and more effectively. Librarian looks pretty much like what I take except I don't see the point in taking a plasma pistol when you could just make him a Epistolary and it allows him to use Smite every turn which is much more powerful compared to any weapon he can have. Also it allows the Librarian to use the Force Dome and your Force Weapon when locked in combat. The Bolt Pistol is there if you really cannot afford to take a shot (as well as getting the extra attack) or incase you want to use the Force Weapon as well as Force Dome.

Tactical Squads are great but bear it mind that it's not always great to take a heavy weapon as it either forces you to combat squad to make the most of it or makes the special weapon useless/the special weapon makes it useless due to you either moving or not. Also, where are the combi weapons on your Sergeants! (Specifically of the Flamer and Melta kind).

...And the rest of the list seems great. Also bear in mind that this isn't saying your list is bad I was just listing some alternatives you could use.

I've been looking at the combi-weapons, they are just so expensive. Hardly seems worth it. I'm generally a fan of combat squadding, so the HWs don't bother me.

This was my first time running the Librarian, so I need to tinker and see what I like there. He died before he could do anything other than negate a Guide. =\

This is far from my "I will play this" list, I've got lots of experimenting to do, but it seemed decent.

If you like combat squadding, why not take razorbacks instead of rhinos?  Just a thought.  The extra dakka might come in handy.

I have and continue to consider it, but coming from a heavy IG background, it's hard for me to dump a lot of points into an AV11 vehicle.

I'm not a big fan of Razorbacks with Combat Squads. Building your entire list with the intention of Combat Squadding is just asking for issues in Annihilation.

Schev, I don't have much to critique. It looks like an extremely well-rounded list!

Did you add a second Storm Bolter to every Rhino?

Huh? Unless I misread the codex, which sadly I don't have at work today, Rhinos come naked by default. No?

Nada. They come with a single Storm Bolter, and the upgrade gives you a second one. Some people enjoy their little firebases but I don't like spending that many points on it.

Personally, I'd use the points to give a Multi Melta to the Redeemer.

Yeh, those points will be re-allocated then. I ran a pintle MM in my first game and it did pretty well, so that's certainly an option.
