Hey all! WHFB player taking a look at WH40K! [Coming from Tau Online too]

Hey there, I just registered here, thought it could be good since I'm starting with 40K and I'm getting Tau as my first army!
I already play WHFB, where I field a Skaven army (I just love 'em, nothing beats them fluff/feel-wise!) and after many, maaanyy exhortations from two of the players (Ogre Kingdoms and Tyranids, the other The Empire and Blood Angels) at our coalition I'm going to get a WH40K army, namely Tau 

Other than that.. Well I guess I should say that I'm currently acting economist at our coalition, SFRF. It's a club of sorts which me and some of my friends started this summer. We're currently getting paid by another organisation to promote Wargaming and roleplaying in our area, and it helped us to get a locale here in town for free which we use to hold get-togethers, showing Wargaming, painting miniatures, organize tournaments and roleplaying for random people that drops in! Most of the time it's just us playing without getting bothered at all  :funny:

Played my first 40K game yesterday with a stand-in Tau army against Tyranids, list written by myself! I died hard.

Yeah, until Tau get updated you should probably get used to losing  a lot or getting a different army. They're cool, and do decent when played by a veteran gamer, but even a noob Imperial Guard player will be able to outshoot you. They should be getting an update in a couple of years, so if you really like them, stick with it.

If you like the xenos aspect: go with Eldar,or wait a couple of months until the brand new Dark Eldar are released. Also very shooting, very fast, and the promise of lots of cool, new models.

If you like shooting, go Imperial Guard.

If it's really that bad maybe I should consider another army to collect, maybe until the new codex is released? Well, I've always been interested in Chaos Space Marines.

Tau really arn't that bad at all! Sure, there not a top tier army, but there by far not sitting around the bottom rung (I'm looking at DH and Crons). Some of the best players in NZ and Aus play Tau Armies, heck, I've even got a better track record with my Tau then I do with my Space Marines. They just have a slightly steeper learning curve to a few other armies and arn't quite as forgiving. But they can definitely still be competitive in a lot of situations, still great for friendly games as well, and if you like the background, fluff and models, I see no reason why you shouldn't start them up. The Codex release later on would just be an added bonus!

The worst thing I think you could do if you really want to play Tau would be to start another army instead because Tau arn't quite as strong. There's nothing worse then as your getting out your models looking over and seeing a kick dyi Tau army and wishing thats what you were really unpacking instead.

Well, I'll continue playing with stand-in models until I've decided if I like them or not. I just love the models and always been interesting in Tau. Yeah, I'm into Tyranids, Chaos SM and Necrons too, but I don't want to field a Tyranid army when my friend have been collecting them for like 4 years and it's just us three playing 40K atm in our club, and CSM doesn't really get to me the way Tau, Necrons and 'nids do. And Necrons doesn't even have a 4th codex.. I think I'll playtest Tau and maybe Necrons until one of them gets their 5th codex, then I'll decide.
