I think the Banner Exchange is screwing with us...
« on: September 01, 2010, 02:53:40 AM »
Not that I'm the suspicious type or anything. It's just that most, if not all the banners shown at the bottom is mostly Tau Online. Not only that, both banners show Tau Online some of the time. I don't know about you guys but I think someone is screwing with us with the banners and I don't think it's a really nice thing to do.

TO is doing well on the exchange (we're doing better though) so we are going to be showing their banners quite often, just as we're often showing on TO.

For me a usually see a 40K Online & TO banner.

The only thing I find fishy is the fact that our banner exchange program is ranked second only to LO themselves, yet Lustria Online is purposefully placed in front of us.  :(

Then again, it doesn't seem to be smoothly updating itself (or maybe people do it) for a number of sites upon looking. :-\

Speaking of Lustria Online, they just came up for me. :P

But yeah, I seem to see TO a suspiciously large number of times.

We've always had this issue of being in the wrong place. :(

At the current way we'll be have overtaken LO in a few months. :P

So while reading this post I noticed the famous "TauOnline/TauOnline Double Banner" at the bottom of the forum, and realized it really does come up very often. So I sat here at work, and refreshed the page once every 30 seconds for about 15 minutes until I got 30 sets of banners. Here are the results I came up with (It's a little odd):

Results
of the 60 Banners:

38 - Tau Online
6 - Lustra-online.com
5 - warhammer 40k online
3 - www.dragonforge.com
2 - Hellric's Nightmare miniatures
2 - Librarium-Online.com
1 - FatOgreMini
1 - Galaxy in Flames
1 - Let The Dice Decide
1 - ModelingTime.com

Tau Online appeared as a double banner 15 times which is 50% of my results. It did so 13 times in a row at one point.
The only other sites to appear as double banners with www.dragonforge.com, and Lustra-online.com. Both were only 1 time each or 3.33%.

Tau Online appeared as 38 out of the 60 banners observes, or 63.33%, and was displayed over 6 times more often than the next highest displayed banner.

Of the 30 sets of banners displayed, Tau online appears as at least one of the banners 23 times. That means you will see a Tau Online banner 76.66% of the time. That is over 3/4 of the time.

76.66%.

The last stat. While I am typing this message. Tau Online/Tau Online is prominently displayed on the bottom of the Post reply window.  ;)

It's worth noting that Tau Online is ranked quite a bit lower than these lot
6 - Lustra-online.com
5 - warhammer 40k online
2 - Librarium-Online.com

You know what's funny? Going to the last page and this response I've seen TO's banner three times.  :P

So yeah, I think it's time to contact LO and either get them to stop screwing with us, or tell them that Tauonline is manipulating the results/LO and the rest aren't getting their fair show time.

Somethings up if there's more than just a handful of you guys noticing. Going onto the other sites from the links gave me a good mixture of results.

I agree Tau Online is popping up way too often, and thanks a lot for that analysis, BKZer0! I think it might be worth contacting LO about this. I'd be surprised if it was maliciously intended, it might just be a coding fowl-up.

There is the fact that we are only seeing a small fracton of the total views that the LO banner exchange is getting. It also doesn't count the number of views we get over at TO and other sites. There is also the fact that for each view we give them, we get 1 view elsewhere so by advertising TO we are getting plenty of views elsewhere.

FT, do you know anything about the banner-showing algorithm? If it rewards clicks, it may be showing TO on 2S so much because we click it that much.

I wouldn't worry too much though, guys.

Basically we show other sites banners, for each one we display on here we get a showing on another random site on the exchange.

It'd be worth having a look from LO and see which sites pop up on there, as we will show up as well as TO. In theory we should do similarly well for frequency.

It's per view as if it were per click it would have the url lead to something like exchange.librarium-online.com/redirect?site=TAUONLINE&user=GRIMDARK

Well seeing as I had nothing better to be doing this evening, I've done just that!  And after popping over to LO and refreshing the page 99 times, I can exclusively announce the results:

Second Sphere                            33
Tau Online                                   32
Warhammer and 40k                   15
Lustria Online                                8
Warhammer 40k Online                 3
minusimod                                     2
Berks Warhammer 40k Club          2
Fat Ogre Mini                                 1
Hellric's Nightmare miniatures       1
Galaxy in Flames                            1
The Serpent's Lair                          1
Modeling Time                                1
Total                                          100

I've had a look at the code behind the banner exchange (http://phpwebscripts.com/free_scripts/easy_banner.html) and it should be immediately updated as far as impressions and self ordering goes.

But I don't think they're using the standard version, so who's to say what other modifications they've made. It may even be that they have hard coded Lustria Online as 2nd banner.

If we say anything we look like whiners and reinforce the klkn certain people have been spouting about us.

But yeah.  I refreshed this page 30 or so times and generally notice on every other page I go to that at least one of the banners is always TO.  They're probably jerking us around.

Has anyone thought that it's showing up more than the others because people here talk about it all the time? :P

Personally I almost never see it.

Whilst reading this I had a double "modelling time.com" banner.

And now double Librium online one.

Yup, two LO banners for me. And now two TO ones, lol. A bit unnecessary.

They look right, proves we're as popular as TO in terms of banner impressions.
